Goodwin Hosts Symposium on Workplace Incivility, April 23, 2011

On April 23, 2011, Goodwin College will host a half-day symposium on “Human Resource Development’s Role in Workplace Incivility & Violence.” The symposium will involve students and faculty, both from Drexel and neighboring universities, and will bring together renowned HRD scholars and practitioners to interact and network with the Drexel and regional HRD community helping them to develop collaborations for future academic studies.

Workplace incivility is a growing challenge. Despite strides to improve American corporate culture, the incivility problem is causing chaos within employee relationships and diminishing office morale.

According to Dr. Rajashi Ghosh, an assistant professor for the School of Education's Master of Science in Human Resource Development program:

"Uncivil workplace behavior also carries financial costs. For example, the cost of workplace incivility to U.S. corporations in terms of lost productivity and health care costs has been estimated to be $23.8 billion on an annual basis. Moreover, if human resource professionals fail to curtail workplace incivility in its initial stages, such behaviors can disrupt work patterns and lead to more intense forms of workplace violence with possible legal and economic ramifications."
