(PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 15)—Dr. Amy Giddings, assistant teaching professor in Goodwin College’s Sport Management program, was awarded a grant through NCAA matching grants for the advancement of minority women coaches.

Through “Me? A Coach? I Never Thought of That!: A Program to Identify, Understand, and Educate Minority Women Coaches,” Dr. Giddings will focus on creating online, interactive, educational programming for minority women. The content will strive to develop coaching skills while further exploring recruitment strategies to increase the number of minority women entering the coaching field.

“Me? A Coach?” is a phrase often heard among young minority female athletes, as most do not consider the profession when evaluating career choices. Research shows few female athletes intend to coach, and those that do frequently leave early in their careers. Numbers of coaches are even less so for female athletes identifying themselves as minorities.

In collaboration with the Sports Leadership Academy at Drexel University, the program will offer an exciting and extensive online curriculum for minority women in high school and college, presenting coaching as a career choice. While marketing efforts will focus specifically on minority female athletes, the curriculum will be offered free of charge to any interested female athlete and be delivered in an engaging, multi-level format. Successful participants will receive a certificate recognizing their satisfactory completion of this coaching education program.
